Today’s reading: Luke 5:1-11

I love this story because of it’s simplicity. Jesus (by this point a famous teacher/minor-celebrity in the area) tells a bunch of career fishermen how to do their jobs. These guys are worn out, in a bad mood, and I’m sure wondering who Jesus is to be telling them how to fish. But they do it anyway, and the fish come pouring in, and Peter falls on His face and says “I’m too sinful to be around you ...” In response Jesus says “I accept you, come follow me.”

This is what it means to be a Christian. Going to church, tithing, reading your Bible, not doing all the “bad things” - all of that is good, but it’s not what it means to be a Christian. A Christian is simply someone who has looked at their own life and said “I’m too messed up to do this” ... and Jesus in response says “I accept you, come follow me.”

Our lives, then, are about doing the same – dropping everything to follow Jesus. A Christian follows Jesus – by the leading of the Holy Spirit – always listening for His voice. A Christian’s identity is not defined by a career, or financial statement, or even by a family. A Christian is simply a follower of Jesus. That’s it.

Today, tell Jesus you’ll try to follow Him wherever He leads. Think through obstacles that may come from that commitment: where will following Him be hard? Pray in advance for courage/wisdom in those areas.

Also, remember that Jesus cares about your needs. Spend time today asking Him for whatever is on your mind.
